Before the third remake hits the screen this fall, there’s nothing like seeing (or re-seeing) the original. An apprentice actress moves to Hollywood hoping to become a star. She meets a famous actor, who has seen his popularity collapse and developed a drinking problem. At the 10th Academy Awards, A Star is Born was nominated in seven categories, winning in one. Wellman won the Award for best original story, the only Oscar he was to win during his four decade and 80 film career. W. Howard Greene received an honorary Academy Award for the film's colour photography.
